I’ve been reading a lot of Byung Chul Han’s essays and books lately. I highly recommend him, he’s famous for “The Burnout Society” but all of his books have been excellent. He writes in one of his books about “Melancholia” with Kirsten Dunst, so I watched the movie. I’d give it 3.5/5 stars, but the fact that it was even interesting enough to watch says something, considering how bad movies have gotten. It’s Rated R, dark, and not for kids, and is tedious at times, but considering I’d read his essays beforehand I noticed many things I probably wouldn’t have and enjoyed it overall. Very interesting story and great cinematography. It reminded me of the book “Tribe” by Sebastian Junger, in which Junger posits that psychological health and moral growth comes from community, from healthy limits, and from having something to give yourself up to, a cause or mission. In this case, the impending doom of Earth being destroyed is ironically what saves the main character from her narcissistic depression.
