I’m in the middle on the car. It’s been proven that the longer the commute, the higher the stress. I love the freedom and optionality associated with owning a car. But it also is its own kind of prison if you can’t get anywhere without one. Plus, walking or biking is better for you. And cars are expensive for many people. So I think moving forward we should look for ways to make cities walkable, bike-able, and safe to use public transportation in, but not become too ideologically opposed to cars or become too ideologically in support of cars. Is there a middle ground ? I like how vibrant smaller cities and towns have limited parking, which encourages people to walk. I also like it when cities and nations take public safety serious. If there’s even a slight chance of being a victim of a violent crime, why is anyone going to willingly take public transportation?
P.S. It’s not perfect but “The Happy City” has a lot of interesting and fun info about cars and what makes people happy in cities.
